Uk natural gas storage

‘Working gas’ is the volume of natural gas in the storage reservoir that can be extracted during the normal operation of the storage facility. This is the natural gas that is being stored and withdrawn; the capacity of storage facilities normally refers to their working gas capacity. A gas holder, or gasometer, is a large container in which natural gas or town gas is stored near atmospheric pressure at ambient temperatures. The volume of the container follows the quantity of stored gas, with pressure coming from the weight of a movable cap. Typical volumes for large gas holders are about 50,000 cubic metres, with 60 metres diameter structures. Gas holders now tend to be used for balancing purposes, to ensure gas pipes can be operated within a safe range of pressures, rather

Gas storage plays a crucial role in balancing supply and demand in most gas consuming countries. However, Great Britain1 has a relatively low level of gas storage as a proportion of total demand compared with other gas consuming countries in Europe – primarily but not exclusively due its historical reliance on flexible UKCS gas supplies. The closure of the UK’s largest gas storage plant has prompted warnings that the country faces more volatile winter gas prices and is becoming too dependent on energy imports. British Gas’s owner, Centrica, said it was permanently closing the Rough facility off Working gas in storage was 2,043 Bcf as of Friday, March 6, 2020, according to EIA estimates.
