How to Buy a Stock Once It Reaches a Certain Price. Many stock trades are transacted at market prices -- that is, a stock is bought or sold at whatever price is quoted at the time of the trade. But it's $2 x 150 shares instead of $3 x 100 shares. You still lost $300. You didn't reduce your loss by a penny. Maybe it made you feel better that you reduced your average For example, your investment plan might include 40 percent stocks, 40 percent bonds and 10 percent cash. Changes in your stock prices, whether up or down, present an opportunity to re-balance your portfolio. If your stocks drop in value, it could throw off your target percentages.
